In 2024, Minnesota became the first state to pass a law creating a program to recycle the protective plastic film shrink-wrapped over boats during winter storage. Producers of boat wrap material sold in Minnesota are required to fund a program to collect discarded wrap for recycling into other plastic film products. This program allows boat owners to help prevent millions of pounds of waste wrap material from being deposited into landfills each year.
The program — Wrap Recycle Right — rolled out in the spring of 2026 with the establishment of wrap collection sites in select counties. View the online interactive map for site locations as they become available.

Correctly prepare your wrap for recycling by following these steps:
1. Carefully Cut the Shrink Wrap
While the wrap is still on your boat, cut it horizontally above the perimeter band. A shrink wrap knife is recommended, though a utility knife works as well. Please keep strapping separate, as it is not recyclable, and try to avoid getting the wrap overly dirty or wet.
2. Remove All Accessories
Remove vents, doors, zippers, strapping, rope, buckles, wood, and any debris. These materials are not recyclable and should be disposed of separately. Shrink tape may remain on the wrap.
3. Roll and Prepare the Wrap
Starting at the bow, roll the wrap toward the stern. For larger boats, you may cut it into sections first. Fold into manageable 4- to 5-foot widths, then roll tightly (like a sleeping bag). Secure the roll using strips of shrink wrap — not rope or strapping.
4. Keep It Clean and Dry
Make sure your wrap is as clean and dry as possible. Store it indoors or under cover until you’re ready to drop it off.
5. Recycle Properly at Drop-Off Locations
Bring your prepared wrap to one of the Beltrami County collection sites.
