The Long Lake Association is one of the first lake associations in the Bemidji area to partner with the Minnesota Lakes and Rivers (MLR) Lake Steward Program with the help of our dedicated resources and association member volunteers. This program educates and rewards property owners for healthy land management practices to improve water quality and enhance the lakeshore environment. The program offers a variety of tools, training sessions, informational materials, and signs for lake stewards to display with pride. These resources empower property owners to understand their impact on the land, shoreline, and lake ecosystem. By working together, we can create a thriving environment where wildlife, fish, plants, and people can flourish for generations to come—all while celebrating the unique beauty of our lakes and land.

HOW TO BECOME A LAKE STEWARD
- Take the quiz to assess the health of your land and lakeshore.
- Once you’ve submitted your quiz, a Long Lake Association Lake Steward Volunteer will contact you to schedule a walk-through of your property. MLR provides a survey tool designed to anonymously evaluate the Upland, Shoreline, and Aquatic zones of your property.
- Based on the results of the walk-through survey, you’ll receive a score along with helpful recommendations for improving drainage, and promoting land and water health.
- If you achieve a passing score, the Long Lake Association and MLR will celebrate your efforts by awarding you a Lake Steward sign (shown on this page) to proudly display!
- If improvements are needed to your property, you will be provided with ideas, resources, and perhaps grants for the recommended changes to make your land healthy and a thriving natural habitat.
